A Little History
The Manassas location of Meadows Farms was originally a Gil Meadows Nurseries site, which was owned and operated by Gil Meadows, Farmer’s brother. Gil Meadows Manassas Nursery opened in 1987, joining Gil Meadows Annandale Nursery, which had been up and running since the 1970s (which is now also a Meadows Farms Nursery). Gil brought in Mercedes Mendez as his General Manager/Buyer, whom he’d known for 5 years (they worked together for over 30 years!) through their jobs in the public school systems. “We consider it a success for two school people who didn’t know much about the nursery business at the time,” said Gil.

Starting out on 2 acres, Gil Meadows Nursery offered a little bit of everything- specimens, annuals, perennials, evergreens, and deciduous trees & shrubs. “We were very well received in the area…we got great support from the community,” Mercedes noted.

Gil leased the land to his brother, Farmer, in 2001, and the Gil Meadows Nursery to Meadows Farms Nursery transition continued with the expansion of the building and grounds to 5 acres. Gil summed up the switch by saying that they were “very happy being landlords…we don’t have to unload any trucks or work in the rain, but we appreciate the job [the employees] do!”

Gil passed away in 2011, leaving behind many family members, friends, and co-workers who had been touched by his friendly spirit and generosity. He will certainly be missed!
