How To Plant A Bedding Plant Garden

Soil Preparation

Spread one inch of MEADOWS FARMS TOPSOIL and MEADOWS FARMS COW MANURE on the flower beds.  Then work into soil at least 4 to 6 inches deep.  Rake the soil level and space out the bedding plants as desired.

Planting Techniques

Plants grown in peat pots should be planted pot and all.  Plants grown in trays should be carefully removed from their containers.  Cut or break apart as evenly as possible.  MEADOWS FARMS SHREDDED MULCH should be spread over area at a two inch depth.  This is done prior to planting because it is difficult to mulch around bedding plants after planting.  Plant bedding plants at the same depth they stood in the tray.  Space 6 to 8 inches apart.  Meadows Farms recommends using a plant starter when planting to give plants a healthier root system and to reduce transplanting shock.

Watering Techniques

If the weather is hot, sunny or windy, plants should be watered at least once a day.  Do this for a week or until the leaves do not wilt between waterings.  Thereafter, or when the weather is cooler, watering once a week should be enough.  In hot weather, watering every 3 to 4 days may be necessary.

Additional Care

Pinching off tops of young plants when they are about 6 inches tall encourages better branching and production of more flowers.  fertilizer is needed about every other week.  Meadows Farms recommends MIRACLE-GRO.  An all purpose insecticide such as SEVIN can be used for pest control.
