The Ideal Garden
STEP 1 - Choose an area which will receive 5-7 hours of sunlight per day.
STEP 2 - Remove grass, weeds and debris from proposed site. ( A systemic weed killer such as Roundup works well without comtaminating soil.)
STEP 3 - When soil is dry, work soil to depth of 8 - 12" using shovel or rototiller.
STEP 4 - Improve soil using a combination of ORGRO and leaf compost. (4 parts soil, 1 part ORGRO, 1 part leaf compost; this is also approximately 1" of additives, or 6 bags per 100 square feet)
STEP 5 - Thoroughly wet soil 2 to 3 days before planting.
STEP 6 - Stagger planting times, so you can harvest crops over a longer period of time.
STEP 7 - Fertilize every two weeks with a good water soluble fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro.
STEP 8 - A light dressing of mulch will help control weeds.
STEP 9 - Apply lime in the fall, at the rate of 6 to 8 pounds per 100 square feet.
