Creating A New Lawn With Sod

Preparing a lawn for sod

  • Remove all weeds and existing grass.
  • Rototill to a depth of 4-5”.
  • Rake to remove dirt clods, rocks and roots.
  • Add organic compost, such as Orgro and lawn starter fertilizer.
  • Work into the soil well.
  • Rake again to smooth out soil.
  •  Make sure the soil level is ¾ - 1” below sidewalk or driveway, to allow for height of sod.

Laying sod

  • Start the first roll along a straight edge such as your sidewalk or driveway (or two stakes and a string line).  Use a sharp knife to cut curved pieces of sod where needed.
  • Lay each piece of sod as closely as possible to the next one, without overlapping or stretching pieces.
  • Press edges firmly with your fingers, to make sure there are no gaps.  (You may  find it helpful to kneel on a piece of plywood to prevent indentations.)

Finishing the project

  • ROLL your newly sodded area with a roller to make sure there are no air pockets.
  • Run your sprinkler for two hours after laying sod.
  • Water thoroughly every other day, or every day in hot weather.
  • MOW when grass has reached a height of 2-3”
