Fall Lawn Renovation

The lawns in the mid-Atlantic region are looking a bit tired after our dry summer.  It’s time to start renovating!  Here’s what Meadows Farms recommends for a lawn make-over:

Seed
Over-seeding is helpful to improve otherwise healthy lawns.  If your lawn has major dead areas you should consider stripping your old lawn and starting over.  Select seed based on sunlight and traffic.  Meadows Farms carries excellent varieties from Pennington seed and Rebels.   We have chosen the blends best suited to our area.

Straw
Straw is used as a cover to help new grass seed stay moist during germination and to protect it from washing away or being eaten by birds.

Fertilizer
Lawn fertilizers give new grass plants the nutrients needed to develop into a mature lawn.

Lime
Lime corrects the pH (acidity) level of your lawn.  Most grass prefers a pH of 6.5 to 7.0.  Our area is typically acidic and applying lime at the rate of 40-50 lbs per 1000 square feet is normally a good idea.  It is best to have your pH tested through your local county extension agent.

Orgro
Orgro is a finely screened and uniform texture, high organic compost, ideally suited for use as a soil amendment top dressing for turf.
