IT’S NOW AUGUST: THE LAST FULL SUMMER MONTH
Yes, August can be tough for gardening, mainly because of the heat, high humidity, and dryness that make being outside and working in the garden a little unbearable. But don’t fret, as August is also the GATEWAY TO FALL, and the all-important FALL IS FOR PLANTING season comes in September. With that said, August is the month to get ready. Here are a few thoughts and tasks to work on this month.
AUGUST GARDENING CHORES
- My blog last week was on the importance of doing a soil test and having a better understanding of the soil in your lawn and gardens. Without this test and the knowledge it provides, you can do more harm than good for your soil and plants, not to mention all of the money you might be wasting on unnecessary products.
- August is the best month to appreciate all of the ornamental grasses that are showing off their beautiful plumes, providing motion and contrast to your landscape.
- If you have roses, spend August giving them their final feeding of the season. Roses will put on quite a blooming show starting in September when cooler days and nights arrive.
- August is a great month to get ready for the upcoming planting season. Spend some time walking around your gardens taking notes as to what you may want to plant. Don’t forgot about transplanting and dividing some of your overcrowded perennials as well. Fall is the best time for that.
- Fall vegetable seeds and bulbs will be arriving soon.
- I don’t recommend doing any pruning on evergreen shrubs after August. Pruning encourages new growth, which may not have enough time to harden off before we get colder temperatures.
