TRY THESE PLANTS AND TURN YOUR BROWN THUMB GREEN
February is houseplant month for The Great Big Greenhouse. We pride ourselves on the selection of houseplants that we carry. We have a houseplant for you. Some houseplants are easier to care for than others. Success with houseplants starts with choosing the right plant for you. It comes down to making the best choice of houseplant for the location.
Here are my choices of 5 easy caring houseplants:
SNAKE PLANT
The botanical name for the Snake plant is Sansevieria. Some people may know this plant by Mother-In-Law’s Tongue. You may wonder why this plant has that nickname. The name refers to the pointed tip of the leaves, which symbolizes the sharp tongue of the Mother-in-law. There are different varieties of Snake plants, and we have different varieties available. All these varieties are about as easy as it comes to care. Because of the thick, tall, sword-like shape leaves, you want to be very careful when it comes to watering. You water very infrequently. A Snake plant likes to stay on the dry side, and it does not require much light. This is why a Snake plant is considered a very easy houseplant to care for. If ingested, a Snake plant can be considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs.
SPIDER PLANT
The botanical name for the spider plant is chlorophytum. Spider plants get this common name from the small plantlets produced on long trailing stems that resemble spiders. My first collection of assorted tropical plants included a Spider plant – or two – or three. Spider plants make great plants to sit on a tall plant stand (which I had) or use as a hanging basket in a window. A Spider plant can have solid green leaves or the more popular variegated leaf variety. A Spider plant is very low maintenance and is not a toxic plant.
ZZ PLANT
The botanical name for the ZZ plant is Zamioculcas, Zanzibar Gem. You can see where it gets its’ common name. A ZZ plant has shiny, glossy leaves. A ZZ plant can be used on a table, window shelf, or floor plant. It is slow growing. Like the Snake plant, it too likes to be watered infrequently. It is a fun, easy plant to grow and maintain.
POTHOS
The botanical name for pothos is Epipremnum. Talk about a houseplant that is easy to care for. I like Pothos because it will trail over as a growing characteristic. Pothos do great as a hanging basket plant. Pothos come in different leaf colors. We carry a nice selection of different varieties of Pothos, from the green leaf to the variegated leaf and the chartreuse leaf. One thing that I have learned about Pothos is that the green leaf variety is more tolerant of lower light, whereas the variegated and chartreuse varieties may need a brighter light location to grow and thrive.
JADE PLANT
The botanical name for the Jade plant is Crassula ovata. The Jade plant is a very popular succulent houseplant. Another nickname for the jade plant is the friendship plant. The jade plant represents wealth and prosperity because of the shape of its leaves, which resemble coins. Because a jade plant is classified as succulent, you must be careful with watering. A jade plant likes to dry in between waterings. And, it wants to be in a bright, sunny window. A jade plant will live for 50 to 100 years when cared for properly.
