Growing Native Plants in Containers

YES, IT CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY DONE

Anyone who knows me then knows how much of a container nut I am. Where I live now, I have limited space to grow many native perennials, shrubs, or trees. I have added a few native plants to my landscape, and I love seeing and watching the beneficial insects and birds enjoy them. So, how can I grow my passion to have more native plants? Well, the answer seems obvious: GROW MORE NATIVE PLANTS IN CONTAINERS!

Think you need a big backyard to garden with native plants? Think again! In Virginia, native plant container gardening is proof that the smallest patio or balcony can become a buzzing, blooming ecosystem. Container gardening using Virginia native plants adds another layer of magic to any landscape, not to mention feeding my addiction to container gardening.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR SUCCESSFULLY GROWING NATIVES IN CONTAINERS

  • Study your landscape to determine how much sunlight you have where you want to do container gardening. Most Virginia native plants require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Start with the right container. My advice: the bigger the better. More soil means steadier moisture and happier roots. With all containers, be sure there is a drainage hole.
  • In your chosen container, use a high-quality, light, fluffy potting mix.
  • Be aware that container gardens will dry out more quickly than plants in the ground.
  • Good News: Most Virginia native plants are happy staying in their pots year-round.
