A brief stroll on a chilly afternoon reveals sights that are overlooked with the distraction of flowers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3501\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3229.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3229.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3229-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><br \/>\nIn winter, seeds of witch hazels are propulsed far from the parent plant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3502\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3255.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3255-205x300.jpg 205w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Vernal witch hazel in part shade flowers later than another in a sunnier spot. As seedlings vary, the flowers of this witch hazel are more brightly colored. Flowers curl for protection during periods of extreme cold.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3236.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3236-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hybrid witch hazels often begin flowering in February, but the red flowered Diane is flowering at the end of January after recent mild temperatures. The newly opened flowers appear a bit waterlogged since it\u2019s been raining off and on today.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3239.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3239.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3239-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Swelling of tubular flowers of edgeworthia is barely perceptible in late January, only noticed because they are monitored daily. Flowers will continue to swell and first color is likely to be seen by mid February. There was concern that several nights that dropped to zero degrees would injure flower buds and stems, but it appears there has been no damage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3247.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3247-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While hybrid mahonias passed from bloom during the early January cold, leatherleaf mahonia (Mahonia bealei) begins to show the first glimpse of color in late January.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3274.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3274.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3274-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The yellow thread leafed Ogon spirea had a few scattered flowers in December, and in late January swelling buds are noticeable with a few small, white blooms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3257.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3257.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/img-3257-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Flower buds of the variegated Coast leucothoe are evident in late January.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3508\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3508\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3508\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/p1011098.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/p1011098.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.meadowsfarms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/p1011098-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Flower buds of Rainbow leucothoe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No doubt, the garden in winter is more sparse than times when it is chock full of blooms, but it is not devoid of interest.
