GARDEN TIME with DOUG – Celebrations in June

FLAG DAY / FATHER’S DAY/ FIRST DAY OF SUMMER – ALL WITHIN ONE WEEK TO ENJOY AND CELEBRATE!!

June is here. In June, we celebrate Flag Day on Friday, June 14, Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16, and the start of summer on Friday, June 21.

FLAG DAY

Flag Day is this Friday, June 14. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1946, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

Just recently, we here at The Great Big Greenhouse have teamed up with Richmond VFW Post 6364 in collecting your tired, worn, or torn flags. Bring them to us and these flags will be properly retired by the members of VFW Post 6364. This is such a worthy program. So far to date, we have collected over a dozen “old” flags.

We sell American Flags. So, bring us the old flag and you can buy a new one. How convenient is that?

SHOW YOUR AMERICAN SPIRIT BY DISPLAYING AN AMERICAN FLAG!!

FATHER’S DAY

Celebrating Father’s Day began in the U.S. in Spokane, Washington in 1910. President Woodrow Wilson attempted to get Congress to recognize Father’s Day as a national holiday but failed. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson issued the first Presidential Proclamation honoring fathers, designating the 3rd Sunday in June as Father’s Day. President Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

The Great Big Greenhouse & Meadows Farms Nurseries offer an array of gift ideas that will be a hit with dad! If your dad is an avid gardener we have a big selection of beautiful perennials in bloom at this time of year. Also, all dads can use new tools. We have a good selection of hand tools including trowels, shovels, pruners, and more. How about shopping in our houseplant department? We pride ourselves by offering the best selection in all of Virginia. Or, if your dad prefers to make his own choices when it comes to gardening, a Great Big Greenhouse gift card is sure to please. Come see us because we would love to help you find that “one-of-a-kind” gift for your dad.

SUMMER

Summer Solstice always occur between June 20 – 22. This year it is on the 21st. The summer solstice is when the Earth has its maximum tilt toward the sun. It is the longest day of the year with the earliest sunrise and the latest sunset.

Are you a procrastinating gardener? If so, you are in good company. Many people are still planting, especially with beautiful blooming annuals and perennials.  And, many people are still putting together their summer container gardens.

In support of this procrastination, The Great Big Greenhouse & Meadows Farms Nurseries is still bringing in gorgeous annuals and perennials on a weekly basis. We also have a good selection of both vegetables and herbs.

From a personal standpoint, I am still looking at adding some more color. I just planted another basil plant in a container. And I still have an old cast iron pot that needs to be planted. So, I guess I fall into the procrastinator category.

In general, you can still be successful in planting this time of year. Be sure to plant the right plant in the right location. Soak the pots first. Loosen the root system so that the roots can start to grow outward. Add some Espoma Bio-Tone Starter root stimulator inside the hole. And of course, be mindful of watering the plants on a regular basis.

PLANT A LITTLE HAPPINESS!!!!!!
